How to Teach a Sourdough Workshop

You already know something worth teaching.

If you know how to make sourdough, you know something someone else is still trying to figure out.

Turn the sourdough skills you already have into an in-person workshop people can actually sign up for... from what to teach and where to host it to pricing, prep, marketing, and actually teaching the class.

Enrollment is closed for now... but stay tuned! Join the waitlist and you’ll be the first to know when doors open again.

Maybe this sounds familiar...

You’re already the person people ask about sourdough.

“Is it supposed to look like this?!”

Your friend sends you a photo of her starter because obviously you’ll know what’s going on.

“Can I have some of your starter?”

Which is followed by approximately 47 instructions for keeping it alive. 🙈

“You should teach a sourdough class!”

And your immediate thought is...

Me?! Teach?!
Maybe. 👀

You don’t need to know everything about sourdough to help someone who’s starting where you once started.

You might be more ready to teach than you realize.

I taught my first sourdough workshop only one year into my own sourdough journey.

I was nowhere near a pro.

I’d started making sourdough while pregnant with my second daughter because I desperately wanted bread that tasted like home... Australia. Then I got completely hooked.

About a year later, people started asking if I’d teach them.

Which sounded lovely until I realized I had absolutely no idea how to squish an 18-ish hour sourdough process into a two-hour workshop. 🙈

  • What do I prep beforehand?
  • What do they make themselves?
  • What do I send home with them?
  • And how do I make sure everyone leaves actually knowing what to do next?

So... I figured it out.

Workshop by workshop. Loaf by loaf. Lots of trial and error.

I didn’t start teaching because I knew everything about sourdough. I started because I knew enough to help someone a few steps behind me.

And goodness... I’m glad I had a go.

What if this little sourdough thing could become something more?

For me, it started with six loaves and $42.

Not exactly quit-your-day-job money. 😂

But I remember what that $42 felt like.

I’d made something with my own hands... something I’d originally learned because I wanted good bread for my family... and someone else valued it enough to pay me for it.

Those six loaves eventually grew into a cottage bakery.

And when I started teaching workshops, something else clicked.

Where it started
$42

six loaves

My first year teaching workshops
$15,000

In my first year teaching workshops, I made $15,000 from them.

Not from baking hundreds more loaves every week.

From gathering people around a table and teaching them something I already knew how to do.

And I could grow it at a pace that worked for my family, my bakery, and my actual life.

Your business doesn’t have to consume your life to contribute meaningfully to it.

Maybe sourdough workshops could become something more for you, too.

Enrollment is closed right now, but the waitlist hears first when doors reopen.

Knowing you could teach a workshop and knowing how to actually pull one off are two very different things.

Because suddenly your brain starts going...

What would I even teach for two hours?
How do you teach sourdough when the whole process takes basically all day?
Where would I host it?
What would I charge?
What do I need to bring? What do my students need?
How do I actually find people who want to come?!
Aaaand perhaps the slightly terrifying...
What if someone asks me a question I don’t know the answer to? 😅

These are the bits that can make a lovely little “maybe I could teach sourdough!” idea suddenly feel like a whole BUSINESS THING.

But here’s the good news:

You don’t have to figure all of that out workshop by workshop like I did.

I already did that part!!

And I put everything I learned into How to Teach a Sourdough Workshop. 🍞

How to Teach a Sourdough Workshop

Everything I wish I’d had before teaching my first workshop.

This is the course I wish I’d had when I was staring at an 18-ish hour sourdough process wondering how on earth I was supposed to teach it in two. 🙈

We’ll figure out what you’re going to teach, where you’re going to host it, what to charge, how to find your students, what to prep ahead of time, and how to teach the thing... without you having to reinvent the wheel every time.

So instead of spending months trying to piece it all together yourself, you can get to the fun part:

Gathering people around a table and sharing something you love!!

How to Teach a Sourdough Workshop course and resources mockup

Here’s what we’re figuring out together.

By the end of the course, you won’t just have a bunch of sourdough workshop ideas floating around in your head.

You’ll know how to turn one into a class you can teach.

Your workshop

Decide what you’re actually going to teach

What fits into your workshop, what you’ll demonstrate, what your students will do themselves, and what needs to happen before they ever walk through the door.

The details

Choose your venue, price, and class setup

Figure out where to host, how many people to teach, what to charge, and what everyone needs so you’re not panic-buying bannetons the night before. 😅

Your students

Find the people who want to learn from you

Learn how to market your workshop, get people signed up, and communicate everything they need to know before class.

Teaching the class

Know what to say, show, and do on workshop day

Walk into your class with a plan for guiding your students through the process, answering questions, keeping things moving, and making sure they leave knowing what to do next.

You don’t need to become a professional event planner, marketer, and sourdough professor overnight.

You just need a plan for your first workshop.

And that’s exactly what we’ll build!

Still waiting for someone to officially declare you qualified? 👀

I regret to inform you... no one is coming with a certificate that says:

Certificate of Sourdough Teaching

Congratulations! You may now teach people about sourdough! 😂

You don’t need to be a professional baker, have a massive Instagram following, own a fancy workshop space or know everything there is to know about sourdough.

You just need to know something your students don’t know yet.

Remember... you’re not teaching you.

You’re teaching the person who’s still staring at her starter wondering why on earth it isn’t bubbling. 🍞

And her? You can help her.

660 sourdough bakers have already taken the leap.

And 437 are inside the Sourdough Teachers Mastermind. Which is still a little wild to me. 🥹

“
I had so many people ask me to teach them and I didn’t think it was even possible. I had no idea where to start. This course made it so simple to breakdown the process and teach others the art of sourdough!

Before your class came out, I was trying to figure out how to set up a sourdough class. But it was so hard to get the timing down, along with all the steps. Your class was so helpful and helped me start teaching classes immediately! I have done 8 classes this year and people keep begging for more!
Holly M.
“
I immediately signed up and watched her informative videos in December. I held my first workshop in January and through word of mouth every one of my workshops have filled up! I just held my 35th workshop since I started... My daughter is getting married in December and this income has helped tremendously!

“
This course has completely transformed the way I teach! I’ve been able to streamline my original 8-hour class into an engaging 2-hour workshop—without losing any of the magic. The results have been incredible: every session has sold out...
Leslie S.

Your first workshop doesn’t have to be your only workshop.

Once you know how to put a workshop together... you can have SO much fun with it.

Start with the classic sourdough basics. Then maybe one day you think...

WAIT. Focaccia art would make such a fun class.

Or Christmas sourdough. Or compound butter. Or a workshop with that cute little shop down the road you’ve always wanted an excuse to collaborate with. 👀

You get to take what you love, what your people love, and make it your own.

I’ve done this with my own workshops over the years, and coming up with new ways to gather people around a table is half the fun!

You’re not just learning to teach one class. You’re learning how to create workshops you can make completely your own.

“

I just had my 1 year anniversary and have had such a successful year. This week alone I’m teaching 3 workshops: one public at a brewery, one corporate event, and one private in home party tomorrow.

A few things you might be wondering…

Do I need to be an expert sourdough baker?

Nope. If you’re confident in your own sourdough process and can help a beginner understand it, you’ve already got something worth sharing.

I’ve never taught anything before. Is that okay?

Absolutely. You don’t need teaching experience to get started.

I’ll show you how to structure your workshop, what to demonstrate, what your students should do themselves, and how to keep everything moving on workshop day.

Do I need a bakery or my own space to host a workshop?

No! Your workshop doesn’t need to happen in a fancy classroom or commercial bakery.

We’ll talk through your venue options and how to choose a setup that works for your class.

What if I don’t have a big social media following?

You don’t need thousands of followers waiting to buy a ticket.

I’ll show you how to market your workshop and find people who actually want to learn from you... even if you don’t have a massive audience.

How do you teach sourdough in two hours when the process takes basically all day?!

Ahhhh, the best question! 😂

This is one of the biggest things we’ll work through inside the course. You’ll learn what to prepare ahead of time, what to demonstrate, what your students can do themselves, and what they should take home to finish later.

What if someone asks me a question I don’t know the answer to?

Then congratulations... you’re a human sourdough teacher. 😂

You don’t have to know every possible thing someone could ever ask you. You just need to know the process you’re teaching and be comfortable saying, “I’m not sure, but I’ll find out!”

Do I get support after I take the course?

Yes! You’ll also get access to the Sourdough Teachers Mastermind, where you can connect with Sarah and other workshop teachers as you start putting what you’ve learned into practice.
